With hoisting of the holy flag at Sri Periyanaki Amman Temple, Vaikasi Visakam festival commenced in the temple town on Sunday. Hundreds of devotees witnessed the flag hoisting ceremony.

A special yagam was performed in the temple. After the yagam and pujas, aesthetically decorated idols of Lord Muthukumarasamy and Goddesses Valli and Deivanai were taken out in a procession along the outer prakaram of the temple. Later, they were brought to Kodikatti mandapam. Special aradhanas were performed to the ‘dwajasthambam’ (flag post) and to the deities. Amid chanting of hymns and beating of percussion instruments, the temple priest hoisted the flag which had an image of the holy lance, peacock and cock around 12 noon. Celestial wedding of Lord Muthukumaraswamy with Goddesses Valli and Deivanai will take place at 7.30 p.m. on May 20 and the holy car procession at 4 p.m. on May 21, the Vaikasi Visakam day. Veedhi ula will take place on all the 10 days of the festival, which will conclude on May 24.
