Upbraided, they call off the agitation

The contract nurses of the Medical Recruitment Board (MRB) were forced to call of their indefinite strike on Wednesday after the HC termed it illegal.

For three days, hundreds of nurses had arrived from all districts demanding that the government regularise them. The nurses had been appointed on the basis of merit after qualifying in a test conducted by the MRB.

The government’s assurance that they would hike the salary by a few thousand rupees did not satisfy them. The nurses wanted the G.O. 191, applicable to government staff, to be amended to include them.

On Wednesday, a steady trickle of political leaders entered the campus to express support. The media was not allowed to cover the strike leading to journalists squatting outside the gate. By evening, however, the nurses said they had withdrawn their strike though there had been no assurance on their demand.
