The United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government at the Centre has become “vulnerable and its future is a question mark,” former national president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) M. Venkaiah Naidu said here on Sunday.
“It is not because the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has decided to pull out of the government but because of various scams casting their shadow,” he added.
However, he refused to be drawn into any discussion on the political developments in Tamil Nadu, saying it was their “internal matter.” “Let there be some action [on the part of the DMK Ministers] so that you can have my reaction,” he added.
Addressing a press conference at the party headquarters here, Mr. Naidu said that with the Supreme Court striking down the appointment of P.J.Thomas as CVC, “the Prime Minister stands exposed for trying to foist a tainted bureaucrat on the agency which is supposed to fight corruption at the highest level.” “Only a man of impeccable integrity should have been appointed for the post and not a man against whom a corruption case is pending in court,” he added. He wanted to know why such a compromise was struck.
Dr. Singh had caused huge embarrassment to the Prime Minister's office because of this episode.
“While he expressed helplessness with regard to the 2G spectrum issue because of the compulsions of coalition, what was the compulsion in appointing the CVC?” he asked.
The least he could do was to tender an apology in Parliament to the people, he added.
Mr. Naidu said the appointment of Joint Parliamentary Committee with regard to the 2G spectrum allocation was not an end in itself. “We will see to it that all the scams are probed,” he added.
All national-level office-bearers of the BJP would meet in Delhi on March 9 to discuss various issues ailing the country and chalk out the party's future course of action.
