Two-day chess competition concludes

Sudharsan Gurukrishnan of Little Flower Higher Secondary School, and Prethepa Aravind Senthil Kumar of S.R.K. Matriculation Higher School, both in Salem city, won the title in the boys and girls sections respectively in the ‘senior’ category (for students of classes X – XII) at the two-day Salem regional level ‘The Hindu in School’ Chess competition – 2016 presented by Thyrocare which concluded in the city on Sunday.

P.R. Hirthickkesh (Jawahar HSS-CBSE, Neyveli) finished runner-up in the senior boys section and P. Jana Preethi (Parimalam Matriculation HSS, Hosur), was runner-up in the girls section. The titles in the ‘junior’ category (for students of classes V – VIII) went to P. Dixit Tharun Raja (Parimalam Matriculation HSS, Hosur) in the boys section, and to S.G. Suhashini (Jawahar HSS-CBSE, Neyveli) in the girls section. J.J. Nawin (Bala Gurukulam Matriculation School, Salem) and N. Mounikha Harini (St. Jose Matriculation HSS, Salem), finished runner-up in the boys and girls sections.

S. Udayath Kiran (Thangam Mount Litera Zee School, Salem) emerged victorious in the sub-junior category (for students of classes classes I – IV).

S.M. Sahana (Cluny Vidya Nikethan CBSE School, Salem) was runnerup. S. N. Tharesh (Cluny Vidya Nikethan CBSE School, Salem) finished third and G. Nishanth (Kailath Manasarovar School, Salem) won the fourth place.

As many as 372 school students, both boys and girls, from the districts of Salem, Namakkal, Erode, Krishnagiri and Dharmapuri, participated in the tournament being held in the Thiagarajar Polytechnic College auditorium.

The tournament is conducted in association with the Salem District Chess Association.

The tournament was played under Swiss system basis following latest FIDE rapid rules.

Amit Kumar Singh, Superintendent of Police, was the chief guest and he gave away trophies / medals and certificates to the winners.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Singh urged the younger generation to cultivate reading habit. He commended ‘The Hindu’ for presenting factual reporting without sensationalising the events. Reading ‘The Hindu’ will help the youngsters in building their overall personality and successfully face the competitive examinations.

M. Senthilvel, president, Salem District Chess Association, and V. Karthikeyan, Principal, Thiagarajar Polytechnic College, offered felicitations.

Thyrocare is the presenting sponsor. Thiagarajar Polytechnic College sponsored the venue. Its chairman C. Valliappa presented a cash award of Rs. 10,000 to the outstanding players.

Milka Breads was the snacks sponsor.
