Police stumbled upon a case of suspected honour killing while questioning two persons in connection with another case, and recovered the remains of body parts of a 17-year-old girl reportedly murdered and dumped in a well two years ago.

The police recently recovered the burnt trunk of a woman at Manalur near Siruthondanallur in the district and picked up Balasubramanian and Arumugam of Kalvai near Srivaikundam for questioning on Thursday.

The duo told the police that they did not know anything about the case, but reportedly confessed to have murdered another girl, their niece, and dumped her body in a well two years ago.

They reportedly told the police that Vennila (17), daughter of Sudalaimuthu, their relative, married a youth from another community against her parents’ wish when her family was in Tiruppur.

Sudalaimuthu brought Vennila to Kalvai on the pretext of formally solemnising their marriage. However, her whereabouts were not known ever since. Sudalaimuthu filed a case with Seythunganallur police in this connection.

Even as there was no breakthrough in the case, the startling confession by Balasubramanian and Arumugam triggered a flurry of activity on Thursday evening. After the water in the well was pumped out, Fire and Rescue Services personnel collected a few bones on Friday. The police sent them to Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital for tests.

“We suspect that it is a case of honour killing as the girl married a youth from another community despite opposition from her parents and relatives,” a police officer said.

Seythunganallur police are on the lookout for a few more persons in this connection.
