Officials of Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board found two dyeing units discharging untreated effluents into River Noyyal in violation of the Madras High Court directive, during the checks conducted on Thursday night and Friday.

TNPCB Environment Engineer (flying squad) G. Gopalakrishnan, who detected the illegal operations along with Assistant Environment Engineer S. Sathyaraj, told The Hindu that both the units were at S. Periyapalayam area situated alongside Tirupur-Erode highway.

The units were dyeing fabrics on a large scale with one of them having three winches and the other two winches. “The different winches have the capacity to dye fabrics from 15 kg up to 150 kg in a single lot,” the TNPCB officials said.

The untreated effluents were discharged from the units into a stream that takes the same into the Noyyal, Mr. Gopalakrishnan said and added that the winches were sealed immediately after the raid.

“We have sent a report to the Board’s head office requesting issuance of necessary directions to the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation to disconnect power supply to the buildings in which the dyeing units were functioning,” he added.

The Board officials also said that criminal proceedings would be initiated against the owners of the dyeing units.
