Two child marriages were stopped by the intervention of officials here on Monday.

Childline 1098, run by LEAF Society, received information about a marriage scheduled for a 17-year-old girl of Paramathi Velur taluk with that of a 29-year-old man of Erode on March 25. A team comprising Village Administrative Officer Rekha, Revenue Officer Ravi, P. Gomathi from Childline, Special Sub-Inspector Tamil Selvi from Anti-Human Trafficking Wing and officials from District Child Protection Unit visited the girl’s home and found that preparations were on. The girl had completed her Class 10.

In another case, officials found that a 13 year-old girl was engaged to a 25-year-old autorickshaw driver in Sendamangalam. The girl was pursuing her Class 8. The team including VAO Sumathi, Sub-Inspector Muthusamy, and G. Ramalakshmi and R. Subhasri from Childline visited the girl’s home. Inquiries revealed that marriage was scheduled in May.

In both the cases, written statements were obtained from the parents and they were asked to produce their daughters before the Child Welfare Committee on Tuesday.
