Two boys were electrocuted and 35 others, a majority of them students, were injured when a live wire fell on a tourist bus on Sothuparai dam road near here on Sunday evening.

The deceased were identified as B. Mukesh (15) and Karthik Selvan (18) of Achampathtu village in Madurai district.

Critically injured

Five critically injured students – Karthikeyan, Muthukumar, Pandi, Sathikumar and Kishore – were rushed to the Theni Government Medical College Hospital.

Finance Minister O. Paneerselvam visited the hospital, consoled the injured and monitored treatment being given to the injured persons.

Thirty students, including Nivetha, Abirami, Azhagu Devi, and Vijay, are undergoing treatment in the Periyakulam Government Hospital.

A total of 65 persons, mostly students and their relatives were on a summer tour, organised by an NGO at Achampathu village.

They toured Suruli Falls, Kumbakarai Falls and Sothuparai dam.

The accident took place while they were returning home from the dam.

Tried to pluck mangoes

When some students in the bus tried to pluck mangoes in a farm near Sothuparai dam road, a branch of the tree fell on the bus along with the snapped live wire.

Police have registered a case.
