“Kalaignar Health Insurance Scheme a major success”

Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Sunday said he would ignore critics of the Kalaignar Health Insurance Scheme, who have termed it a scandal, because truth would eventually triumph.

Narrating true life stories of beneficiaries of the scheme, the Chief Minister in a statement said a total of 1,53,257 had been benefited from the scheme which was launched one year ago.

The government had paid Rs. 415. 43 crore to hospitals for treating patients under the scheme. A total of 1,44,45,117 families had become members of the scheme and 1,33,60,439 families had been given identity cards.

Mr. Karunanidhi said the scheme had become a major success, disproving critics who had questioned its viability and implementation.

“My joy was boundless when some beneficiaries met me at the Secretariat and told me that they would not have survived but for the scheme,” he said. The Chief Minster said 108 ambulance scheme was also receiving appreciation as it had proved a saviour for people in rural areas. The differently-abled also benefited substantially under various schemes.
