Total prohibition is not promulgated in many states in the country. Moreover, prohibition will cause huge loss to State’s exchequer, said Minister for Power R. Viswanathan. Distributing aid to SHG members and other beneficiaries at a function held here on Thursday, he said that prohibition was not promulgated in many states including Andhra, Kerala, Karnataka and Pondicherry.

Total prohibition will ultimately pave way for illicit distillation of liquor. Such activities will enhance the income of anti-social elements who will ultimately use this money for illegal activities only. At the same time, revenue to the government will also be scaled down sharply. New schemes would not be implemented without funds, he pointed out.

Considering these factors, the government did not introduce total prohibition in the State and undertook sale of liquor.

Later, the Minister distributed laptop, hearing aid and grants to the tune of Rs.1.65 crore to 441 SHG women and other beneficiaries at the function. Earlier, the Minister flagged of an anti-drug awareness rally in the town take out by students of various colleges. He distributed goats to 11 persons who were earlier involved in illicit distillation of liquor and later abandoned it. The government has implemented several schemes for the welfare of the poor, he pointed out.
