TN govt invite bids for green field port in Nagapattinam

The Tamil Nadu government has proposed to invite bids for developing a green field port in Nagapattinam at a cost of Rs. 380 crore.

Mumbai-based i-maritime Consultancy Pvt. Ltd was engaged in the bidding process for developing the port, a policy note tabled in the State Assembly said on Monday.

The bidding process would be initiated based on recommendations of a technical sub-committee headed by Joint Finance Secretary, it said.

The Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, which prepared Techno Economic Feasibility Report, has recommended developing the port as an ‘all weather, deep water, direct berthing port’.

The primary and secondary hinterland of the proposed port at Nagapattinam would comprise districts of Perambalur, Villupuram, Salem, Namakkal, Karur, Thanjavur, Thiruvarur and Erode, it said.

On the Kattupalli port, inaugurated by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa recently, it said, “the joint venture company - L&T Shipbuilding, formed between Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation and L&T Mumbai, has proposed to handle containers, general and project cargo and automobiles”.

About the setting up of a 4000-MW Super Thermal Power Project by National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) at Marakkanam in Villupuram district, the policy note said, “an in-principle approval for establishing a Port to handle coal for this power plant has been granted”.
