Members of Tamizhaga Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (TMMK) staged a protest here on Sunday, against BJP leader Subramanian Swamy for demanding that the Madurai International Airport be named after freedom fighter and Thevar leader Muthuramalinga Thevar.

Led by party office-bearers Durai Thavamani and Rahman, supporters of Dalit leader John Pandian staged the protest at Sandai Thidal here and attempted to burn the effigy of Dr. Swamy.

Plea in Rajya Sabha

After the police prevented them from burning the effigy, the agitators burnt the portrait of Dr. Swamy and raised slogans against him for making the demand in the Rajya Sabha recently.

When the Dalits were demanding that the Madurai airport be named after Dalit leader Immanuel Sekaran, Dr. Swamy had made the demand in favour of the Thevar community, Mr. Rahman said.

Party volunteers, led by district (west) secretary Sekar staged a protest against Dr. Swamy in Sikkal.

They brought two effigies of the BJP leader, but the police prevented them from burning them. They dispersed after staging the protest, police said.

Members of Puthiaya Tamizhagam and Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi staged protests against Dr. Swamy at different places in the district a few days ago.
