Tiruvannamalai Health Unit Division (HUD) achieved 100% coverage on the first day of the second round of the intensified Pulse Polio immunisation campaign on Sunday.
Going beyond the target of immunising 1,44,373 children aged below five, the HUD covered 1,49,247 children by way of administering the drops to many children in transit. Through this, the HUD recorded 103.4% coverage.
Health officials said as it was vacation time, and on Sunday they covered several children in transit, particularly those who visited the temple town with their families. Booths to administer the drops were set up in and around Sri Arunachaleswarar Temple.
The Cheyyar HUD achieved coverage of 99%. As many as 86,044 children out of the target 89,177 were immunised against polio. Officials said the children, who have been left out, will be covered during the door-to-door checks to be carried out for two days.
Overall, as many as 1,971 booths were set up at the two HUDs in Tiruvannamalai district. Mobile booths were in place at bus terminals, railway stations and theatres.
A total of 7,884 persons were engaged to carry out the immunisation campaign.

90% coverage
Over 90% of targeted children were immunised against polio on the first day of the second round of the Pulse Polio immunisation campaign in Vellore district.
Of the targeted 3,82,291 children aged below five, 3,51,104 children, which is 91.8%, received the drops at booths set up across the district. While Vellore Health Unit Division (HUD) achieved coverage of 93.2%, Tirupattur HUD registered 90.4% coverage.
A total of 2,393 booths were set up across the district. This included booths at toll plazas on the National Highways. As many as 9,466 persons were roped in for the campaign in Vellore.
