Tight race for CLP leader post

May 23, 2016 12:00 am | Updated October 18, 2016 01:08 pm IST - CHENNAI:

Though the Congress won 8 seats in this Assembly election, it has turned out to be the third largest party and the second largest opposition. Now a tight race has begun for the coveted Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader’s post.

Sources in the TNCC said S. Vijayadharani, K.R. Ramasamy and H. Vasanth Kumar were the main contenders. Ms. Vijayadharani seems to be pushing hard for the post, citing her position as the Whip of the CLP in the last Assembly and her performance in the House.

However, her soured equation with TNCC president E.V.K.S. Elangovan might make put a hurdle in her path.

Among the three, Mr. Ramasamy is a veteran who was elected five consecutive times from the Tiruvidanthai constituency.

Ramasamy's comeback

While he lost in 2011, Mr. Ramasamy has made a comeback by winning the Karaikudi seat this time.

Mr. Vasanth Kumar, the richest MLA in the House, won from Nanguneri.

The Congress Legislative Party leader in the last Assembly, K. Gopinath, lost in Hosur.

Vijayadharani, Ramasamy and Vasanth Kumar are main contenders for the post
