An overcast sky did not leave the city’s residents disappointed on Wednesday. Several areas received sharp showers, which left many interior roads inundated by evening. The city may continue to enjoy thunderstorms for one or two days.
After sharp showers for a few hours in the afternoon and evening, the weather observatories in Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam recorded 1 cm and 2 cm of rainfall till 5.30 p.m. on Wednesday. Chennaiites, who were expecting another humid day, were glad as thunderstorms lashed several parts of the city. Several schoolchildren returning home were caught unawares as rain started around 2.30 p.m. in some areas.
Several interior roads, including those in T. Nagar, Triplicane and Mylapore, were waterlogged by evening. Officials of the Meteorological Department said the thunderstorms would continue over the State for one or two days, after which there may be a decrease in rainfall activity. A trough that runs from Telangana to south coastal Tamil Nadu had triggered the thunderstorms over many parts of the State.
Rain or thundershowers may continue over many places in the State and Puducherry on Thursday. Some places may even get heavy rainfall, said an official. The sky would be overcast in Chennai and the city may get showers during evening or night on Thursday.
Thunderstorm activity since early this month has helped boost the State’s rainfall for the season. According to the data of Meteorological Department, Tamil Nadu has so far received 20 cm against the average of 15 cm since June 1. Chennai district’s rainfall is lagging slightly behind at 23 cm against the normal of 24 cm for this season.
