Over 2,000 buses operated to help people perform ‘girivalam’ on Chitra Pournami

Several lakhs of devotees thronged the temple town to perform ‘Girivalam’ in view of ‘Chitra Pournami’ on Wednesday.

The district administration had made elaborate arrangements as devotees from across the State and neighbouring States visited Tiruvannamalai town for the event.

Security was stepped up in view of the large crowd. The police department deployed a total of 2,000 personnel at various locations, an official said.

The district administration had set up temporary bus stands at 11 locations to avoid traffic congestion in the town including at Athiyandal, Anna Arch, Vettavalam and Manalurpettai. The Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation operated as many as 2,146 special buses that made 6,350 trips.

An official said shuttle services were operated on five routes. The private bus owners provided free shuttle services for devotees, while TNSTC charged ₹5.

Arrangements were made for providing drinking water for devotees. Shelters were also put up to help devotees manage the heat.
