Thoothukudi residents plagued by power cuts

May 30, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:47 am IST - Thoothukudi:

Recurring power cuts in some localities in Thoothukudi seem to be a never-ending problem for residents.

Frequent power cuts at Bharathi Nagar and its adjoining areas had brought hardship to the people. Though power generation increased considerably, the distribution network covering residential areas was weak, M. Balasubramanian, president, Bharathi Nagar Residents’ Welfare Association, said here on Sunday.

Often power supply was suspended at 11 p.m. and it was restored only at 6 a.m. the next day, and this happened for almost four days a week. This problem had been continuing for the past six months. Even power inverters kept at houses could not withstand such long-duration power cuts, K. Shanmugaraja, a resident of Bharathi Nagar, said.

Power cuts were experienced also in Pushpa Nagar, SPM Nagar, Alphonse Nagar and its surroundings, P. Velumani, another aggrieved resident, said.

There was also the problem of low voltage supply. Establishment of a transformer could be the only remedy to end the problem, some affected residents said.

Mr. Balasubramanian said that the issue had been taken to the notice of Mariappan, Executive Engineer (in-charge), Tangedco (Urban).

Mr. Mariappan told The Hindu that the process of locating a site for erecting a transformer was on. The officials were also preparing an estimate for setting up the transformer, he added.
