Tension prevailed at Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College Hospital here on Tuesday after leaders of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam refused to receive the body of party cadre, who died under suspicious circumstances at Karumandurai on Monday.
T.P. Rajmurugan of Poraiyur in Villupuram district was electrocuted when he came in contact with an iron pole, which was touching a live wire.
DMK leaders, including T.M. Selvaganapathy, MP, along with cadre and family members of the deceased, gathered before the mortuary and refused to receive the body. They alleged that some persons from the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam roughed up Rajmurugan and hurled him at the pole that was already touching the live wire.
The Karumandurai police registered a case of suspicious death stating that he was electrocuted while trying to tie a party flag on an iron pole.
Mr. Selvaganapathy and other functionaries said that they had obtained permission from the Returning Officer on November 23 for the election campaign to be addressed by DMK treasurer M.K. Stalin. They questioned the police permission for the AIADMK’s two-wheeler rally at the same time, which had led to commotion and scuffle among the cadre.
Though the election flying squad videographed the entire incident, he wanted to know why no action was taken against persons involved in the incident. “The police were mere spectators when the AIADMK workers damaged the DMK hoardings and posters in the area,” he added.
