Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Thursday reiterated in the Assembly that the crime rate in the State was the lowest in the country.

Responding to observations of the deputy leader of Opposition, R. Mohanraj of the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam, on the incidence of crime, the Chief Minister said there was no country that had nil crime and no place in any State that had nil crime. What was critical was the proportion of crime incidents to the population of a State. Going by the data of the Centre, Tamil Nadu had the lowest crime rate, compared to other States.

Adding that she made this point clear in her reply in the House last month to the debate on the address delivered by Governor, she also asked Mr. Mohanraj to go through the text of the reply.

As for crime incidents, one had to see whether action had been taken against the perpetrators. Necessary steps would be taken if any instance, requiring the government’s response, had been brought to the notice of the government, she added.

Later, on an another issue, the Chief Minister explained that it would take at least one-and-a-half years to recruit police personnel, as there were numerous procedures and norms to be followed through before making appointments in the police department.
