Tamil is the only surviving classical language globally and this spirit will live on forever, according to G. Chockalingam, Judge, Madras High Court.
While addressing an international conference on ‘Life and History of Ancient Tamilians’ organised by the Department of Tamil at St. Mary’s College here on Saturday, he said Tamil was used as the language of the people irrespective of caste, creed and religion and it was reflected in the literary works of poets, who lived in the days of yore.
During the programme, Justice Chockalingam released three books titled ‘Pazhanthamilar Vazhvum Varalarum - Aram, Porul and Inbam.’ As many as 316 research papers on various topics in Tamil Literature were submitted by scholars from various colleges and universities, sources said.
The programme was presided over by Sr. Alphonse Rosaline Mary, Principal of the organising college.
Semmuthai Sathasivam, Tamil scholar, Sr. Jesie Fernando, college secretary and scholars from various colleges also spoke on the occasion. Earlier, A.M. Sonal, Assistant Professor, welcomed the gathering. A. Amala Arularasi, Head, Department of Tamil, proposed a vote of thanks.
