Survival skills are necessary to prevent deaths and serious injuries during disasters, according to Additional Chief Secretary T.S. Sridhar.

Inaugurating ‘Police commandos’ brave military grade survival camp’ at Gundupatti village near here on Sunday, he said professional training, including navigation, evasion to avoid capture, signalling, life support mechanism, search and rescue, and handling of advance equipment as part of disaster response preparedness would be imparted to participants in the three-day training programme.

“After training, the trained personnel will be in a better position not only to save themselves but also to rescue others who are caught in difficult or dangerous situations,” he added.

Additional Director General of Police Sylendra Babu said the camp was focussing primarily on developing survival skills of commandos to overcome hostile terrains, inclement weather and severe temperatures.

The trained personnel would be pressed into service in areas affected by disasters such as cyclone, landslide and flood and also in Naxal-prone areas.

A training team, comprising Anoop Madhavan, senior instructor of American Red Cross, Premraj Maniraj and Lakshmanan Karuppiah would train the commandos.

Mr. Anoop Madhavan said well-trained disaster response frameworks would dramatically reduce fatalities during large-scale disasters. The personnel from Tamil Nadu Commando Force and Tamil Nadu Coastal Security Group Marine Police Commando participate in the training programme. Collector T.N. Hariharan and district-level officials were present.
