A super specialty block will come up on Thanjavur Medical College and Hospital campus here at an estimate of Rs.150 crore and it will comprise 10 major specialty units. While the Central government will contribute Rs. 120 crore under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana, the balance will be contributed by the state government.
Explaining the advantages of the block on the sidelines of a function to mark the observance of World Hemophilia Day here on Friday, P. G. Sankaranayaranan, Dean, said the block would have units such as cardiology, cardiology surgery, nephrology, neurology, neuro surgery and gastroenterology.
A regional cancer institute would be started here at an estimate of Rs. 15 crore. Modern equipment such as linear accelerator would be set up at this unit and specialists had been posted. A new post mortem block and a new mortuary block would be constructed at an estimate of Rs. 3 crore.
On the services available at the toxicology intensive care unit, the Dean said that there has been an increase in the number of patients being treated at this unit. As many as 352 persons had so far been treated at this unit, inaugurated in last November. Persons with snake bites were the largest beneficiaries; on an average, three persons with snake bites were treated daily.
On awareness being created about World Hemophilia Day, he said 45 persons including 16 children were being treated for the ailment. “We have made arrangements for immediate administration of medicine to the needy at the out-patient unit itself to ensure prompt treatment.”
Earlier, Collector N. Subbaiyan inaugurated the awareness programme to mark the observance of the day. He appreciated the efforts taken by the doctors to treat patients with hemophilia.
