A wetting brought cheer to all sections of the society in this hill station on Tuesday.
Tourist season
With the tourist season in this popular vacation destination about to begin, lack of rains has been a source of concern among the residents and officials. The rain was not significant either for standing crops or from the drinking water point of view.
However the downpour apart from raising hopes has helped settle the dust, lower the temperature and render the surroundings verdant. Official sources said that some other parts of the district including Kotagiri and Coonoor experienced rains over the last few days.
Crops
Pointing out that the irrigation crop season is now in progress, the Joint Director of Horticulture, N. Mani told The Hindu that annual crops like potato, cabbage, beans and carrot are now in their early stages of growth. Since water sources were drying up a few heavy showers would be of considerable benefit.
Rains were also needed to control the Red Spider Mite problem in tea gardens.
