Students block road

March 27, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:35 am IST - KUMBAKONAM:

Members of the Students Federation of India and several college students staged a road roko at Kovilanchery near here on the Kumbakonam-Chennai highway on Thursday demanding removal of a TASMAC outlet, which, according to them, was creating social tensions.

The protesters pointed out that many girls were studying in the three private colleges located near the shop.

Besides, tipplers were causing trouble to passersby and students were greatly affected by the anti-social activities of those frequenting the shop.

Despite repeated requests, the officials were not taking efforts to relocate the outlet, and we were forced to undertake the stir in public interest, the protesters said. Revenue and police officials arrived at the spot, held talks with the agitating students and persuaded them to drop the stir but not before assuring them that immediate action would be taken on their plea.
