Student suicide: Political parties stage demo pressing for CB-CID investigation

August 27, 2016 03:03 am | Updated 03:03 am IST - Rameswaram:

Suspecting foul play in the death of the plus two student of the Sri Parvathavarthini Amman Girls Higher Secondary School on the track near Uchipulli Railway Station, volunteers of various political parties and local people staged a demonstration here on Friday, demanding that the case be transferred to the State Crime Branch CID police.

Expressing lack of confidence in the investigation being done by a special team of the Tamil Nadu Railway Police, volunteers of DMK, BJP, CPI, CPI (M), Congress, Tamil Maanila Congress and Tamil National Movement staged the demonstration, with a large number of public in front of the bus stand here.

BJP District president K. Muraleedharan and CPI (M) leader C. R. Senthilvel said it was not a case of suicide as being portrayed by the Railway police and demanded a CB-CID probe to unravel the truth behind the death, which they believed was a murder.

There was no need for the girl to go all the way to Uchipulli to commit suicide, they said. As the family members said she was normal at home and the school authorities said she had no problem in her studies, only a CB-CID probe would help to unravel the mystery, they said.

Meanwhile, the Railway special team made considerable progress in the investigation on Friday and found that the girl, B. Yamuna had a love affair with James (name changed), a 22-year-old local youth and was reprimanded by her brother for wearing a chain with a cross.

The SIM card recovered from her valet was the one bought by her lover and she used her mother’s mobile phone to contact him, sources in the special team said. He had last spoken to her over phone a day before she allegedly jumped before a speeding train on Monday night.

The special team detained James, working as a driver and interrogated him, the sources said. Post-mortem report said the deceased was not sexually assaulted and investigation showed that James was not present with the girl in Uchipulli on the fateful night.

He was driving for officials of Vazhuthur gas plant, who stayed in a private hotel here and CCTV footages showed that he was present in the hotel on Monday night, the sources said. All the leads pointed towards the suicide theory and there was no reason to believe she was murdered, the sources said. James did not respond positively when she wanted him to marry her and this could have driven her to take the extreme step, the sources suspected.
