A student of a private engineering institution has been booked for reportedly killing two puppies in Vellore by throwing them from the terrace of a building.

Based on a complaint from an animal rights activist, Katpadi police have registered a case on Wednesday.

The final year engineering student, Vishesh Iyengar, who was residing in an apartment in Vaibhav Nagar, Katpadi, had allegedly thrown one puppy from the terrace of his building last Saturday.

“Some of the students residing in the area were taking care of the puppy. It had wandered and reached his house one day. He had thrown the puppy from the terrace of his building, and it died,” said Shravan Krishnan, an animal rights activist.

The student claimed that the puppy had reached his house and dirtied his clothes, Mr. Krishnan said, adding that Vishesh was living on the third floor of the building and it was not possible for a puppy to climb up.

“On Tuesday, the students, who were taking care of the puppy, shared with me photos of the animal and the place where they buried it. When they inquired with the neighbours, they were told that he had earlier killed a puppy in a similar way. He had sent messages on WhatsApp to his friends saying that he killed a puppy,” Mr. Krishnan said.

Complaint lodged

Mr. Shravan Krishnan approached the Katpadi police station and lodged a complaint.

He has asked the police to exhume the carcass and conduct post mortem.

Katpadi police have registered a case under section 429 (mischief by killing or maiming cattle etc., of any value or any animal of the value of fifty rupees) of Indian Penal Code read with Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.

Last year, two medical students were held for throwing a puppy from the terrace of a building near Chennai.
