Student dies as pillar caves in

A class V student was killed when a portion of a concrete pillar at the entrance of a government primary school fell on him on Friday. The victim was identified as Karthik (10) son of Kandan (43) of Vadaagaram Mariamman Kovil Street in Marakkanam.

According to police, the incident took place around 9 a.m. when Karthik opened the gate to enter into the campus. One of the concrete pillars that supported the gate toppled and fell over Karthik.

He sustained injuries and died on the spot. The body was retrieved and sent for post-mortem to the Pondicherry Institute for Medical Sciences (PIMS). A case has been registered.
