The State government has filed an appeal in the Madras High Court challenging a single Judge’s order of April 26 this year barring degree and diploma holders from private nursing institutions from competing with those who had studied in government institutions for appointment as nurses in government hospitals.
Equal opportunity
In the appeal, the Principal Secretary, Health and Family Welfare Department said a G.O. of January last year clearly stipulated that neither the rights of candidates who studied in government institutions nor of those who studied in government recognised private institutions should be affected. Equal and just opportunity should be provided to both categories. The decision had been taken considering the larger public interest and to implement the constitutional mandate of providing equality in public employment as envisaged under Art.16 (1) of the Constitution, the appeal said.
