A large number of members of the Southern Railway Mazdoor Union (SRMU), including women, staged a demonstration in front of the Salem Railway Division in support of the strike of the central trade unions and also to highlight their demands.

The SRMU members drawn from different parts of the Salem Railway Division participated in the agitation. M. Pandian, SRMU divisional president, M. Govindan, SRMU divisional secretary, led the agitation.

Earlier, they took out a rally from the Salem Railway Junction to the divisional office. They urged the government to do away with its move to amend the labour welfare acts, prevent foreign direct investment into public sector undertakings, abolition of contract system of employment in public sector undertakings, 40 per cent hike in the 7th Pay Commission recommended salary with retrospective effect from January 1, 2014, doing away with the new pension policy, removal of ceiling for bonus and EPF.
