The Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) general secretary Vaiko on Monday claimed that the three-lakh Sri Lankan Tamils were subjected to great hardships in the "concentration camps" in the island nation.

The representatives of the United Nations had been sent out of the country and the media barred from visiting the camps accommodating “Internally Displaced Persons”, Mr. Vaiko told reporters.

He claimed that the Indian government was continuing its assistance to Sri Lanka which had completely trampled upon human rights. The Tamils were put in "concentration camps," he alleged.

The MDMK had been firm in its stand that a separate Tamil Eelam was the only solution to the ethnic crisis. The party had adopted a resolution in this regard during its first State conference at Tiruchi in 1995, he recalled.

The zonal conference, being organised by the party as part of the valedictory function of the centenary celebrations of the former Chief Minister, C.N. Annadurai, at Tiruchi on September 15 would be a turning point for the MDMK, Mr. Vaiko said. He expressed confidence that it would rejuvenate the younger generation.

Through the conference, the party planned to propagate the ideals and ideology of Annadurai to the younger generation. A total number of 300 party cadres carrying torches would converge from Chennai, Kanyakumari, Coimbatore and Poompuhar to the conference venue at Uzhavar Sandhai ground in the city on September 15, he said.
