: Pongal festival can be hailed as ‘Tamilar Thirunal’ only when all Tamils speak to their children in their mother tongue, said BJP MP Tarun Vijay.

Addressing the media during his one-day visit to the temple town on Wednesday, Mr. Vijay, who sought national recognition for Tamil and Tiruvalluvar, said that elders must speak to their children only in Tamil and similarly, the children must take a vow on the Pongal day to speak in their mother tongue.

Mr. Vijay sought again to make Tamil the official language in the Madras High Court. He said that he would strive to get Tirukkural couplets painted on all public vehicles. Efforts would be made to propagate Tirukkural in all primary schools in Punjab so that the children understand the greatness of Tamil language, he said, adding that Tirukkural must be translated into all Indian languages.

He said that he would take steps to get the Big Temple more known as Peruvudayarkoil, as described in several inscriptions of King Rajaraja Chola, rather than as Brahadeeswarar temple.

Mr. Tarun Vijay was here as part of his ‘Tiruvalluvar Tirupayanam’ that he commenced in Kanyakumari on Monday.
