Motorcycle-borne men snatched gold chains of five elderly women in different incidents in the city on Sunday.

Around 7.45 a.m. on Sunday, Srimathi, 62, a resident of Coats Road in T. Nagar, was walking on Srinivasa Road to a temple.

“Usually, I go to the temple around 5.30 a.m and wear a chain made of beads. Today, it got late and I forgot to replace my gold chain with an inexpensive one. Two persons wearing helmets and riding a bike came from the opposite side. I stepped aside to give them way, but one of them snatched my 11.5-sovereign chain and the duo sped away,” Ms. Srimathi said.

Fathima Beevi, 61, a resident of Vivekanandar Street, Virugambakkam, was on her way to buy fish around 8.30 a.m. when two persons riding a bike snatched her 10-sovereign chain and fled. While the person riding the bike was wearing a helmet, the pillion rider had his face covered with a handkerchief.

Around 8.30 a.m., Vasundhara, 61, a resident of Samiyar Thottam, Seventh Avenue, Ashok Nagar, was walking towards her brother’s house when two persons on a bike snatched her chain, weighing 15 sovereigns, and escaped.

The police are scrutinising the CCTV footage of the incident to identify the suspects.

In Valsaravakkam police limits, a 67-year-old woman lost her 9-sovereign chain to thieves.

Shantakumari of Kancheepuram had come to visit her relatives.

Around 9 a.m, when she was walking on Krishnaswamy Street, Alapakkam Road, two persons riding a bike came from the opposite direction, snatched her chain and fled.

Marked similarity

While the person riding the bike was wearing a helmet, the pillion rider had his face covered with a handkerchief. Police suspect the same gang to be behind all the incidents.

In Tirumangalam, two persons riding a bike snatched a five-sovereign chain from Jessi Manohara, 75, a resident of Vasantham Colony, Anna Nagar, when she was on her way to the church in the morning.

Cases have been registered and investigation is under way.
