Chief Minister Jayalalithaa inducted 66 new buses for State Express Transport Corporation (SETC) and Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) in the Nagercoil region through video-conferencing from Chennai on Monday.
P. Thiruvambalam, General Manager, TNSTC-Nagercoil region said that 27 new buses had been allotted to Nagercoil Region. While the new buses would be operated on the existing routes, old buses would be used for town bus service.
Seven buses had been allotted for the Nagercoil-Thiruvananthapuram route, eight buses for Tirunelveli route, two buses each for Velankanni, Coimbatore and Tuticorin and one each for Thanjavur, Madurai, Tiruchi, Tiruchendur, Sivakasi and Koodankulam, he added.
The Chief Minister also flagged off 39 new buses for SETC. Of these 10 were allotted to Thiruvananthapuram depot, six for Marthandam, nine for Kanyakumari and 14 to Nagercoil depots.
Free bus pass for 2,700 retired employees of TNSTC were also distributed on Monday.
Collector Sajjansingh R. Chavan, Kanyakumari MLA K.T. Pachaimal, Nagercoil Regional Transport Officer R. Rajinikanth and Kanyakumari District Milk Producers’ Cooperative Union chairman V. Asokan were present at the Ranithottam depot.
Tirunelveli
Ms. Jayalalithaa also inducted 12 new buses to the SETC fleet and 24 to the TNSTC fleet through videoconferencing on Monday.
The new buses are expected to provide some respite to the TNSTC’s Tirunelveli division, which is grappling with old buses for the past several years.
Collector M. Karunakaran was present at the function held at the TNSTC’s central office at KTC Nagar in Palayamkottai.
Tuticorin
In Tuticorin 20 buses — 12 to TNSTC and eight to SETC – were added. Collector M. Ravikumar participated in the function.
