Soft skills are essential requirement for students, said N. Gopalaswami, former Chief Election Commissioner, speaking at the college day of Srimad Andavan Arts and Science College. He advised the students to acquire interpersonal skills, team work and read worthy news. He congratulated the college for its achievements in finding placements for its students. J. Radhika, Principal, presented the annual report. Ammangi V. Balaji, secretary, K.S. Devanathan and N. Kasturirangan, former secretaries, spoke.

Prizes were distributed to students.

Graduation Day

Nine hundred and twenty eight candidates received their degrees at the Graduation Day of K. Ramakrishnan Group of Institutions. Four hundred and eighty five candidates, including 25 university rank holders, of K. Ramakrishnan College of Engineering and 443 candidates, including 27 university rank holders, of K. Ramakrishanan College of Technology, received their degrees from Rajeev Kumar Singh, Global Head, (Campus hiring team), WIPRO Ltd. K. Ramakrishnan, chairman, S. Kuppusamy, executive director, D. Srinivasan, Principal, K. Ramakrishnan College of Engineering, and S. Muruganandam, Principal, K. Ramakrishnan College of Technology, were present.

Meet on nanophotonics

As many as 90 papers were presented during a national conference on Nanophotonics, organised by the School of Physics, Bharathidasan University. The two-day conference covered six themes: Nanomaterials: Synthesis and characterization, solar energy, light emitting diodes, lasers, biomaterials, and biophotonics. M. Lakshmanan, Professor Emeritus and Raja Ramanna Fellow, inaugurated the conference. S.V.M. Sathyanarayana, Assistant Professor, School of Physical, Chemical and Applied Sciences, Pondicherry University, delivered the valedictory address. S. Moorthy Babu, Director, Centre for Nanoscience and Technology, Crystal Growth Centre, Anna University, Chennai, presided. S. Santhosh of CSIR-CECRI, Karaikudi, and G. Kalai Selvan of Bharathidasan University were presented the Young Researcher Award. Muthu Senthil Pandian of SSN Research Centre, Chennai, received the Young Scientist Award.

Annual day of college

Higher education does not stop with research, but also entails educating the community in accordance with their needs and interests, said Rev.Fr. Xavier Alphonse, Advisor, Centre for Research and Development of Community Education, speaking at the annual day of Bishop Heber College. Highlighting the various provisions of the new Education Policy 2015, he gave a perspective on higher education in India and the need for institutions and universities to focus attention on accessibility, quality education, excellence in transformation and skill based training. D. Daniel Ezhilarasu, general secretary, All India Association of Christian Higher Education, released a book “Teaching to Transform”, authored by Jeyekar Chellaraaj. The first copy of the book was received by Rt. Rev. G. Paul Vasanthakumar, Bishop and Chairman, CSI Tiruchi-Thanjavur Diocese. D. Paul Dhayabaran, Principal, presented the college day report. Staff with meritorious service and best outgoing students were honoured.

“Be job creators”

Students should be job creators and not job seekers, said Solaikutty Dhanabal, Academic Programme Manager, IndRAA National Instruments, Inc., USA, speaking at the college day of Saranathan College of Engineering. D. Valavan, Principal, presented the annual report. Mr. Dhanabal gave away cash awards to toppers and prizes to winners of various competitions in the presence of S. Ravindran, secretary.

Contribution of Khushwant Singh

Sri Venkateswara College of Education, Peravurani, conducted a two-day international conference sponsored by Sahitya Akademi, New Delhi, on the contribution of Khushwant Singh to journalism, History and Literature at its campus recently. K.Chellappan, Former Director State Institute of English, Chennai in his inaugural address stressed that Khushwant Singh’s writings reinforced the fact that religious beliefs cannot divide humanity and India. In his keynote address, Prof. Andreas L.Katonis, Thessaloniki University, Greece admired the unique and strange imaginary power of Khushwant Singh. Meerarao of Mysore University, Isaac Jebastine of Bharathidasan University, Shanthi, and Omprakash of Hyderbad University and Pothan Prasthab of SV University, Thirupathi, R..Kamarasu, Member, Sahitya Akademi, Tamil Nadu spoke. The first copy of the book on Khushwant Singh was released by Jeevagan Ayyanathan, Vice - Chairman of Sri Venkateswara group of Institutions. M. Solayan, Principal, proposed a vote of thanks.

Sports meet

The annual sports meet conducted at the Periyar Maniammai University, Vallam, Thanjavur, drew forth the latent sport talent among the student fraternity in the campus.

Colourful and exciting march past marked the commencment of the meet after the house flags were hoisted by dignitaries. Significantly the placards carried in the march past stressed the need for voting conscientiously besides backing the call for ``Make in India'' slogan of the Central Government.

After the Olympic Torch was lit by a group of sports persons, the oath taking ceremony took place. Registrar of the PMU S. Sridharan delivered the presidential address while the Pro-Vice Chancellor M. Thavamani offered felicitations. Chief guest K. Chandrassekaran declared the sports meet open by emphasising the importance of sport and games in every person’s life and career. A balanced physical and psychological health was important for achieving the desired ambitions in life, he said.

Chief guest for the prize distribution was the former kabaddi international R. Sundararajan and he delivered a thought provoking speech on the importance of sports and games and the openings available for meritorious and achievement-oriented sportsmen and women. The Red House bagged the overall championship.

“Financial Management”

A recent lecture on “Financial Management” held under the Power Talk series conducted at the Gnanam School of Business, Sengipatti, led the managment students through a maze of financial problems and solutions even as it guided the participants in overcoming tricky situations. V Gopal from the Indian Institute of Management, Tiruchi, was adept in what he was unravelling before the students and enlightened them in the intricacies of financial management.

The main objective of the programme is to make the students aware of the basic financial terms. Mr. Gopal started with an introduction about dividend. He explained the determinents of the dividend policy, dividend yield, dividend distribution tax, dividend distribution, tax calculation etc. A plethora of information on bonus share was discussed. Case study of a company was given to each student participant and the gathering was divided into groups and asked to discuss the issues concerned. Students were asked to comparatively analyse the balance sheet and taught how to interpret it. Chief Executive Officer, Gnanam School of Business, S.P.S. Aruldoss was present.

Prizes distributed

XTASY 2016, the Annual Day celebrations of the Prime College of Architecture and Planning, Keezhvelur, Nagapattinam district held recently brought forth the vibrant innovative talent among the students as it showcased their academic and cultural achievements.

Chartered Architect and Principal V. Balakrishnaa of M/S DIDRAITEE, Coimbatore, and IPS officer R. Rohith Nathan inaugurated the programmes. Chairman, Prime G roup of Institutions, N. Govindaraj, presided. Principal, Prime College of Architecture and Planning, A. Parisutharajan, gave an inspiring speech. He read out the annual report. Prizes were distributed to meritorious achievers in academics and sporting events on the occasion.

Moot court contest

“About 10,000 hours of deliberate practice in any profession guarantees success and it was this passion that gave India its outstanding jurist son, Nani Palkhivala, who continues to be an eternal source of inspiration for many practising advocates and law students,” said senior advocate Arvind Datar.

Delivering the valedictory address of 12th Nani Palkhivala memorial national taxation moot Court contest organised by the School of Law, Sastra University, Mr. Datar spoke on “Nani Palkhivala and Indian Constitution.” He recalled the contribution of Nani Palkhivala in securing the basic features of the Constitution. Highlighting Palkhivala’s arguments in various cases such as Kesavananda Bharati, Bennett Coleman, Golaknath, Privy Purse, bank nationalisation case among others Mr. Datar chronicled Palkhivala’s journey that changed the course of Indian jurisprudence in the light of constitutional values. He also elaborately touched upon the significant role of Palkhivala in putting to halt Parliament’s unquestioned power to amend the Constitution.

N. Venkatraman, senior advocate, Supreme Court of India, spoke of Nani Palhkivala’s undivided commitment and spiritual faith in our nation and advised the students to tread the path of Dharmic values in their legal pursuit. He referred to the complexities of the emerging global tax conflicts arising out of source, residence and situs based principles.

The 12th Nani Palkhivala National Taxation Moot Court competition saw participation of 16 Law Schools from various parts of the country including 11 National Law Schools. The final jury was presided over by R.S.V.S. Pavan Kumar, Commissioner of Income Tax (Exemptions), Chennai, and comprised Senior Advocates Mr. Datar and Mr. Venkatraman. The team from Symbiosis Law School, Pune, emerged the winner of the Moot Court Competition and was awarded a cash prize of Rs.50,000 and a trophy. The runner up team from Rajiv Gandhi National Law University, Patiala, was awarded a cash prize of Rs.25,000 and a trophy.
