Smoke from burning garbage chokes residents

April 12, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:34 am IST - ERODE:

Smoke emanating from the corporation’s garbage dump yard at Vendipalayam has triggered fear among locals about the fire getting bigger and uncontrollable.

The corporation workers were found dousing the smoke with water on Tuesday. Around the same time last year, a major fire broke out at the dump yard requiring an operation by Fire and Rescue Service personnel lasting for days. The fire prompted the civic body to devise a plan for improving solid waste management at the dump site by involving a scientist team of Bhabha Atomic Research Centre. However, there has been understandably no progress on that front so far.

Residents in the surroundings said the corporation needs to be extra-careful about ensuring that the fire does not spread due to the dry conditions caused due to intense heat.
