Six persons, including two children, were killed after the sedan they were travelling in plunged into a canal near Pollachi in Coimbatore, early Wednesday.
The police said that all the deceased were related to each other, and belonged to Masakalipalayam in Coimbatore.
The deceased have been identified as R. Prakash (45), a cable operator, his wife P. Chitra (40), their daughter Pooja (8), Prakash’s sister Sumathi (50), Prakash’s sister in law P. Latha (42) and her child Dharani (9).
The accident took place at Gedimedu near Pollachi at 1.30 a.m. when the six persons were returning home after visiting a temple in Palani. They were travelling from Udumalpet via Pollachi to Coimbatore.
The car plunged into the canal of the Parambikkulam Aliyar Project, reportedly after Prakash lost control of the vehicle, which belonged to his brother Panneerselvam.
The car was completely submerged in the canal killing all the six persons.
The vehicle was pulled out by the Fire and Rescue Services personnel and the police around 6.30 a.m. All six persons were found dead in the car.
The Gomangalam police shifted the bodies of the deceased to Government Hospital, Pollachi, by 7.30 a.m. The police have started an investigation into the cause of the accident.
