The Tamil Nadu Small Industries Development Corporation (SIDCO) is poised to set up five industrial estates across the State this year, said P. Mohan, Rural Industries Minister.

The industrial estates would come up mostly in backward districts. The proposed estates would be established at Nesampadi and Vallur in Dharmapuri district, Pattanam and Kattuvannanjur in Villupuram district and in Cuddalore, he said.

He was speaking at the foundation laying ceremony for the Kattuvannanjur industrial estate in Sankarapuram taluk near here on Saturday. Mr. Mohan said the industrial estate would be set up at a cost of Rs. 3.95 crore on 10.35 acres.

On completion, it would provide direct jobs to 1,700 people and indirect jobs to 3,000. The Pattanam industrial estate would come up on 60 acres and would provide job opportunities to a few thousands.

The industrial estates would give a thrust to the growth of small and medium industries in Villupuram district and would pave the way for the overall development of the region.

He pointed out that as far as his department was concerned, the Chief Minister had made 17 announcements which were immediately followed by government orders. This would facilitate speedy implementation of all the assurances given by the government.

The Minister also noted that the work on infrastructure in the Kattuvannanjur industrial estate, such as construction of roads and drainage facility and installation of street lights would begin soon.

On the occasion, Mr. Mohan also laid foundation for construction of a polytechnic college in Sankarapuram at a cost of Rs 13. 97 crore. The college building would have three floors to accommodate the classrooms, laboratories, a hostel, an auditorium and staff quarters.

The Minister commended the district administration for showing keen interest in implementing all the government projects. District Collector V. Sampath, SIDCO Managing Director N. Karthikeyan and other officials participated.
