For the last two years, N. Hemamalini has been training hard to make a mark in javelin throw. Earlier this month, this class X student of Government Girls Higher Secondary School, Odugathur achieved a milestone.

She won the gold medal in the under-16 event for girls and also broke the South Zone record at the 26th south zone Junior Athletics Championships held in Hyderabad on October 13 and 14. She broke the existing record of 36.65 metres by achieving a throw of 38.05 metres.

“I was earlier playing throw ball and then moved to javelin throw. Next, I want to make a mark in the national championship and will work hard towards participating in the Commonwealth Games,” said Hemamalini.

Her father S. Neelakandan is a farmer and her family supports her dream, she added. Being in class X and involved in sports is not a difficult task, she said. “I practice in school in the evening after class. So, I do not have a problem in managing studies,” she said.
