Seven persons who were named as accused in the double murder that took place on Oyyamari Road in Tiruchi on June 1, surrendered before the Judicial Magistrate Court in Mudukulathur in the district on Tuesday.

Judicial Magistrate Isakkiappan was conducting the proceedings when the accused, accompanied by local advocates, surrendered before him. The Magistrate remanded them in judicial custody, after which they were lodged in the district jail here, police said.

The surrendered accused were P. Kaliyamurthy (37), D. Saravanan (33), B. Thangadurai (22), R. Sathish (23), D. Kumar (46), R. Kannan (36) and M. Anbazhagan (31).

They hailed from Thirulukattupalli, Thirukattupalli, Bavana Mangalam and Thiruchanampoondi in Thanjavur district, the police said.

They were among the eight-member gang named in the double murder carried out by an armed gang to avenge the murder of one Panchapakesan in Thirukattupalli in 2015.

The armed gang hacked to death V. Senthil Kumar (35) and A. Vincent (34), when they were returning to Thanjavur on a two-wheeler after attending a marriage in Tiruchi.

After committing the crime, the gang members escaped in an SUV. Suganthi, wife of Panchapakesan, was among those named as accused in the case, the police said.
