Seven hospitals under the control of Directorate of Medical Education are set to get new equipment at a cost of Rs.10 crore.
An order, issued by the Health and Family Welfare Department, said the Director of Medical Education had submitted a proposal for which the government gave administrative and financial sanction.
As per the approval, Government Stanley Hospital in Chennai will get a 128 CT Slice Scan at a cost of Rs.4 crore. Other institutions in Chennai for which new equipment are to be procured through Tamil Nadu Medical Service Corporation, are: Government Hospital for Thoracic Medicine, Tambaram a digital X-ray machine (Rs.1 crore); Institute of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Government Hospital for Women and Children, an HDR Brachytheraphy (Rs.1.50 crore); and Institute of Child Health and Hospital for Children, three units of dialysis machine (high end) for Rs.30 lakh.
The order said the sanction was also given for procuring an operating microscope for neuro surgery department of the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital at a cost of Rs.1.45 crore; an Extra Corporeal Lithotripsy Machine for Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital for Rs.1.45 crore; and a high end ECHO machine for the Government Thoothukudi Medical College Hospital for Rs.30 lakh.
The government also directed the Director of Medical and Rural Health Services to send necessary proposals for procuring life-saving equipment to the hospitals under the Directorate. It was announced in the 2013-14 State budget that Rs.20 crore would be provided for purchasing of such equipment for government medical college hospitals and secondary care hospitals.
