Seminar on transgender welfare

In continuation with the research projects, seminars and training programmes aimed at the welfare of the transgender community, the Political Science and Public Administration Wing, Directorate of Distance Education, Annamalai University, has announced a three-day international seminar on “Trans* Wellness and Wellbeing” from March 26-28.

The seminar will focus on personal, policy, legal, medical and psychological problems faced by the community. Around 400 participants including academics, NGOs, human rights activists, transgender activists and social reformers from different countries are expected to participate the seminar, said a release from the university.

The Political Science and Public Administration Wing has been running two major research projects- ‘Transgenders in Tamil Nadu: An Empirical Study with Reference to Social Exclusion – Facts and Values’ and ‘Transgender Community in Tamil Nadu: A Study on Social Behaviour, Human Rights and Social Status’ with financial support of the UGC and the Indian Council of Social Science Research. The research projects intend to examine social status, human rights issues, legal issues, state of social exclusion, and ways to bring the transgender community into the mainstream, and their social inclusion, said the release. Findings from these research projects, seminars and training programmes have been forwarded to the Central and State governments.
