The Tamil Nadu police have asked their counterparts in Kerala to provide adequate security to a large number of Tamil population settled in Udumbanchola (Idukki district) after several families reached Dewaram (Theni district) early on Wednesday saying that they were attacked and forced to leave, police sources said.
While scores of families settled and working in tea estates in Negungundam, Udumbanchola, Paraithodu and Mailadumparai villages returned to Theni in the last three days, a large number of people, including women and children, reached the Tamil Nadu border during the early hours following tension in the Udumbanchola taluk, the sources said.
“Following information that there is some intimidation in the Udumbanchola taluk, we have requested the Kerala police to protect the Tamils there. They have confirmed that a team led by Deputy Superintendent of Police (Munnar) has been deployed in the area. It is said that one shop was set on fire…” Director-General of Police K. Ramanujam told The Hindu .
