Security has been beefed up at actor Rajinikanth’s residence in Poes Garden here, in view of protests by a few pro-Tamil outfits opposing his potential entry into politics.

At a recent meeting with his fans, the actor hinted at making a foray into politics. Although welcomed by the major political parties in the State, his latest indication about his future plans drew opposition from some pro-Tamil outfits.

On Monday, over 30 activists, claiming to belong to Tamilar Munnetra Padai, a fringe outfit, staged a protest on Cathedral Road. Voicing their opposition to Mr. Rajinikanth’s potential entry into politics, they asserted that Tamil Nadu “should be ruled only by Tamils”. They also detonated an explosive substance stored inside a replica of the actor near the U.S. Consulate.

The police subsequently took them into custody. Four of the agitators were booked under the Explosive Substances Act and remanded in judicial custody.
