In the absence of a compound wall around the Government Higher Secondary School in Palayapalayam in Erumapatty block, students have been attending classes in an unprotected environment for many years now.
The school was started in 1962 to cater to the education needs of children in Bodinaickenpatti, Palayapalayam, Alanganatham, and Muthugapatti.
It was upgraded as higher secondary school in 1998. The student strength consistently stood at over 1,000 till 2007.
Snakes, and insects frequent the school as it is surrounded by bushes and agriculture fields.
Two-wheeler riders use the school ground as a short cut to reach nearby villagers.
During night, the school turns a meeting point for anti-social elements, and many could be found consuming liquor there.
The school does not have proper toilet, and drinking water facilities.
The school has sought funds from the government to construct a wall. Former students of the school are planning to mobilise ₹ 6 lakh for constructing the wall.
