Scholarships for minority students to study abroad

Stakeholders urged to take advantageof scheme

The Government of India is offering many scholarships for the engineering students belonging to minority communities for studying abroad and the concerned stakeholders should take full advantage of the same, said U. Sudhir Lodha, Member, State Minorities Commission.

He was speaking at an awareness workshop on the scheme titled ‘Pado Pardesh’ (study abroad) offered by Government of India at the Government College of Engineering here on Thursday. More than 700 students belonging to minority communities studying in 70 engineering college in the Salem Zone of Anna University, participated in the programme.

Mr. Lodha said that the programme for the welfare of minorities provides scholarship for meritorious students for pursuing studies in overseas countries and this will promote educational advancement of the beneficiaries. The objective of the scheme is to award interest subsidy to meritorious students belonging to economically weaker sections of notified minority communities so as to provide them better opportunities for higher education abroad and enhance their employability.

He said that study abroad scholarships up to 50 per cent on tuition fee was being offered exclusively for students from Tamil Nadu. Apart from international study, the scheme also took care of job opportunities.

He said that the scheme benefitted more than 500 students belonging to minority communities from South India last year.

He said that the banks are well-prepared to sanction educational loans, provided the students submitted all the related documents to them.

J. Chandrasekaran, Assistant General Manager, Indian Bank, Salem zone, explained the interest component for the educational loans for overseas studies, documents to be submitted for availing the same, procedure to be adopted etc.

R.S.D. Wahida Banu, Principal, Government College of Engineering, also spoke on the occasion.
