V. Sivakumar (43), an engineer from Tirupur, who lives in the U.S., is on a mission to save the Kangayam cattle.

In the last one year, he has purchased 650 cattle from traders who were to slaughter them. They are being taken care of at a goshala he has opened near Kangayam.

Mr. Sivakumar says the idea came to him when he went to a shandy in Oddanchathram two years ago to buy a cow. There, someone told him about the pathetic status of Kangayam cattle and how they were being sent to slaughterhouses. While Mr. Sivakumar is in the U.S., volunteers at the goshala look after the cattle. “These cattle are subsequently re-sold to those who want to rear them. At any given time, there are nearly 100 cattle at the shelter home,” he said.
