Members of the Erode District Sand Lorry Owners’ Welfare Association on Monday submitted a petition to the district administration urging the State Government to resume operations at the sand quarries.

They said 3,000 lorries in the district had to be grounded due to the halt to sand quarrying and that the lorry owners who had raised bank loans for purchase of the vehicles were facing problems in settling dues.

Welcoming the State Government’s decision to take over the sand quarries, the association functionaries mooted the idea of cheque payment. The association also called for ensuring loading of sand in right measures.

Salem Special Correspondent adds:

The sand lorry owners of Salem district have thanked the State Government for its decision to run the sand quarries on its own and observed that this initiative will enable in getting sand at a reduced price.

Selvaraj, district president of the Salem district Orunginaintha Manal Lorry Urimaiyalargal Sangam, told reporters here recently that the Government all of a sudden shut down the sand quarries in the state. The sand lorry owners called on the Chief Minister and urged him to consider the running of the quarries by the government itself.
