‘Salem Railway Division playing vital role in tapping solar energy’

General Manager, Southern Railway, Vashishta Johri, said that the Southern Railway is going in a big way in tapping and using non-conventional energy sources such as solar energy in all its activities.

Speaking to reporters here on Thursday after inspecting the Salem Railway Junction, he said the Division is playing a vital role in tapping solar energy. Southern Railways is trying to tap all alternative avenues in the power front.

When his attention was drawn to the fact that the coaches of the Chennai Egmore – Tiruchi Rockfort Express and the Chennai Egmore – Thanjavur ‘Uzhavan’ Express being kept idle for the whole day in Tiruchi and Thanjavur respectively and the plea of the commuters to operate regular trains from Salem to Tiruchi/Thanjavur using these coaches, the General Manager replied that maintenance work of these coaches is done during the day time.

He said that the Railways have taken steps for upgrading the Railway Hospital in Erode. When asked whether the Railway Hospital in Salem too will be upgraded, Mr. Johri said that the railway employee population in Erode is much bigger compared to Salem due to the presence of various railway units in Erode.
