Rs. 10-crore bank money seized, released

May 07, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:46 am IST - Virudhunagar:

A static surveillance team (SST) on Friday morning intercepted a vehicle and found in it Rs. 10.05 crore being taken from a bank in Madurai to another in Nagercoil.

Though the officials took the money to the Sub-Treasury here for want of any proper document for transporting such a huge cash, they later handed over the money to the bank officials after they produced the required documents. The news of seizure of such a huge amount created a flutter as only small-value cash and articles had so far been seized in the district.

The SST team intercepted the van on Madurai-Virudhunagar highway at Chatrareddiyapatti check-post around 9.45 a.m. The team took the money to the Sub-Treasury.

Subsequently, Income Tax officials were summoned to the Sub-Treasury. After a thorough enquiry, they found that the money had been drawn from private bank in Bibikulam and was being taken to a nationalised bank in Nagercoil. A cashier, who was in the van, claimed that since the transactions were made online, no hardcopy of transaction receipt was carried in the vehicle.
