Rotary Club of Tirupur, which recently lost an 18-year-old legal struggle, has finally commenced the process of constructing a new building for the school it runs presently on the Jaiva Bhai Corporation Girls Higher Secondary School campus.
Supreme Court bench comprising Justices H.L. Dattu and Arun Mishra, on July 30, dismissed a Special Leave Petition (SLP) filed by the Rotary Club seeking relief from an earlier order by Madras High Court asking the club to shift its school from the Corporation school campus.
The parent teachers association (PTA) of Jaiva Bhai school took up the legal tussle against the Rotary school as it was functioning on the Corporation school campus without proper rules been followed for such occupation.
The new building would come up at a cost of Rs 1.8 crore on a 62 cent plot the Club already bought a few years ago at Rayapuram area in the city.
“We are going to complete the construction by May 2015,” K. Vaidyanathan, president of Rotary Club of Tirupur, told The Hindu .
N. Gopalakrishnan, the then vice-president of PTA at Jaiva Bhai school, who was among those initiated the legal struggle against Rotary school in 1996, quipped, “Why, even after purchasing the land few years ago, did the Club drag on and show extra interest in staying back on the Corporation school campus as far as possible?”
“Definitely, contempt of court proceedings will be initiated if Club does not stick to the Supreme Court verdict,” he added. Mr. Vaidyanathan said that the delay that had occurred in commencing the construction of the new building for the school was due to divided views among the Club members on the choice of some sites.
